2) I made an account just to add the following comment about this comic: Pooing in the river isn't just a French thing. Vox did an informational video about Paris's sewage problem ahead of the Olympics [1]. Apparently Paris has what's called a 'combined sewer system' where waste water from homes and drainage from rain water is piped through the same pipes. When there is too much rain, the overflow is released into a nearby waterway. These were built in cities across the world from the late 19th century through the early years of the 20th century.

I don't even watch the olympics and yet some of the stuff that's happened has been comicly fascinating.

I think the problem was due to some heavy rainfall including some flooding of dirty areas. Maybe some sewage plants too. Shit happens.

@Mike65 Pretty much : the (century old) sewage system is coupled with the rain-drain system, and when it's overflowing (too much rain lately), it's discharging into the Seine.
