Somebody probably jumped to that conclusion after finding buried Greek dead with coins in their mouths. But that wasn't for everyday use, that was to pay Charon on the way to the underworld.
The Ancient Greeks put coins into people's mouths when they died so they'd be able to pay for passage to the land of the dead. Never heard anything about people actually carrying coins in their mouth...
