Shut up, Denmark. You waited longer to give Iceland independence and you still got Greenland and the Faroe Islands (though neither is fighting for full independence at the moment).
But this is the extremely high price you have to pay for being an independent nation who's doing pretty well for itself: You will be teased mercilessly by your Nordic buddies.
Congratulations Finland. May it be several hundred more years.
Then, a few seconds later, Finland sent them to the nearest hospital.
Nothing serious, just some black eyes, a cracked rib, a broken nose, busted lip and swollen cheeks.
He was a on good mood, after all.
EDIT: What? He's still a violent sociopath. He considers beat-ups like that the equivalent of hickeys.
"American Football of the North"? I'm confused by this. Does this mean that roughly a third of commercials involve Norway in some way, and everyone is expected to love Norway in some way shape or form, and compared to other countries people that like Norway tend to be portrayed such that loving Norway is the defining characteristic of their lives?
Because that's what American football is like over here. Every other sport is like "yay, basketball!" or "all right, baseball!", but it's always, always, ALWAYS "FOOTBAAAAAAAAAAAAALL!!!!! WOOHOO!" *cue the music* to the point where I'm pretty sure my own house is the only place where I'm safe from it. Football is love, football is life. Foots for the foot god, balls for his ball throne.
@ukezi I can kinda see it, but at the same time "American Football" doesn't really click as "something that gets passed around a lot" in my head, I hear "American Football" and that says "sport that you are required to love and devote every waking moment of your life not spent working to as an American citizen, as decreed by the almighty NFL!"
100 years of independence - and they even fought off the Soviet Union to keep that independence. Can any of you others claim to have done that? No! Congratulations Finland - don't let your "friendly neighbours" talk you down!
Finland has a spectacular history. What they have gone through is truly vile, yet they have fought and struggled for their country and their place with determination and skill. And in most cases, this would mean a hard, authoritarian outlook. In Finland, however, it grew into a firm democracy that upholds human rights and democratic values better than most.
@Sissyl I wish that last sentence was still true... Hell, France has a ban on extraditing refugees to Finland because we might send them to dangerous places. It's a disgrace what this country has become in the past five-ish years.
Europeans make fun of Americans for thinking 100 years is a long time.
