Okay so basically it's a tiny country, there aren't many opportunities, the men are less charming than men from other places (sorry guys) and tbh I got the vibe that I was expected to more or less stick to a gendered stereotype. And that sucks.
Long back, there was an ad in India that said that if we keep selectively aborting all our daughters, then our sons will have to become gay.
* Facepalm *
Well, history has shown over and over when a somewhat isolated area (most often colonies and industrial towns) ends up with severe shortages of women certain very predictable things happen (aside from, it becomes a pretty dangerous place for the few women who ARE there. I hate to feed any misandrist propaganda about "all men are wolves" ... but you starve them half to death and desperation leads to less PC behaviors... like virtually any human.)
So, as has been done over and over in the past, I expect some enterprising women with heads for business are going to open up high-class brothels in the Faroes... and make themselves an incredible fortune!
What simpler definition of entrepreneurship is there, but to find a problem, and get people to pay you to resolve it!
the reason of why china is running out of women is because china had a one child policy when this comic was made (they changed it to a two child policy) and that a lot of people in china wanted boys, not girls, and they wanted boys, so they'd sometimes abandon the baby girls, which is... terrifying... also, apparently, you can only have to children if one of the parents, or at least the father, is a single child. i learned this at school and a bit of looking it up. so correct me if i'm wrong
@potatoe4life Yup, they did. Kinda a brutal thing, but in the end a good decision. Had they not inplemented that law they would have literally eaten themselves into poverty. Aside of whether I agree with it, it was a law that did its’ job. China as a nation has greatly benefitted from it and its’ people are now a lot better off than they would have been.
@potatoe4life Yep. But remember, they are a bit more harsh than we are here. That problem will sort itself out over the years. Noone lives forever. That is something we are seeing in Holland with the baby boom generation. They are all retired now and need to be taken care of. We spend a lot more on care for the elderly than China does per person. But jobs are starting to free up so things will settle out. It would go faster if the elderly die sooner rather than later. Which I think is what will happen in China. Simply provide only basic care and none of the extra things we do here. Again, very brutal but probably quite effective. I still don’t agree with things like that though. We shouldn’t be treated as a farm animal or resource.
@DutchToSwede What a horrible, awful person you are. Literally millions of Chinese have been murdered under this law--and more besides under other similarly stupid plans of the Chinese government. China starved only when the government decided to drag city teenagers out into the countryside and make them the new farmers. China became extraordinarily poor and backward under the policies of its Communist government and is doing well now--relatively--only because of the "free" economic zones that were set up to allow capitalism to flourish.
As someone with family in China, who has relatives who lived in terror of falling accidentally pregnant and then having their babies murdered or being scooped off the street by police for a forced abortion, I am disgusted and appalled by you. You must have thought the Nazis also had the right idea to get rid of all those Jews cluttering up the place. You revolting animal.
@MarianneDos Why, thank you for your assumptions. Please reread my post. I never stated that I agree with said policies, only that they were effective. This is the same like saying killing 90% of the earth's human population would greatly reduce our impact on the environment. It would work, most certainly, but I think you and I can agree that that is not an ethical solution. And by the way: we are all animals. To assume we are not is a fallacy. We are mammals, no better, no worse. Just another species out of many.
@potatoe4life China uses prenatal scans to selectively abort daughters. Baby girls are also murdered at birth--this is a long tradition in China and no one is ever prosecuted. Some were also abandoned. The cities and some rural areas were subject to the one-child policy but not the entire country. In some rural areas where it was in force, you could have a second child if the first was female. Even without all the murder, in those area, you would get 50% male first child, 50% female first child, then 50% male second child and 50% female second child. All of that adds up to 2/3 male, 1/3 female final ratio.
City people who are single children may now have two children, but China is in a state of demographic collapse. People are refusing to have the second child in sufficient numbers. Things will get very, very bad in China within the next 50 years.
