This actually happened, in 1973 there was a massive volcano eruption in the Westman island and up to 410 houses went under an avalanche of ash. Luckily no one died. The Icelandic people finally had enough and started pumping ice cold water from the sea in attempt to stop the lava flow. And it worked

Ah... I have photos of the lava eruptions that my afi took live of the Eldfell eruptions on Heimaey when those events actually took place. He was a firefighter from Reykjavík and was assisting with the evacuation, snapped a few photos. Don't think he was actually involved with the lava-flow redirection efforts, but awesome none-the-less.
