There's a law against wearing fezzes in Turkey, but it's one of those old forgotten laws that no one enforce anymore. So the Doctor would probably be fine walking around with his favorite headdress.
Now I envision Turkey hanging out at a party with Sister America, where he could complain about guys wearing fezzes despite the law, and she about laws against high heels.
* self-appointed title/nickname which is either derived from the word in its meaning as "healer" or is the etymology of the word in its meaning as "healer" depending on the writer.
@Dan I meant in the show itself. They have this big whole monologue in one of the episodes about how "Doctor" means "healer" or "wise man" across the universe.
Haha, France actually had one "odd law" like this 'till around 2012; Women weren't allowed to wear pants. It was super old, and a running gag in the 21st century.
If I remember correctly, we also have/had one about how it was illegal to own a pig and name it "Napoléon". Something like that.
@Lilium_42 Oh yeah I remember that pig thing, apparently it's a myth that came about because a translator changed Napoleon's name to Caesar when translating Orwell's Animal Farm into French, or something. Wish it was true though
I remember seing a behind the scenes for "the impossible Astonaut" where the costars complained to stephen moffat, "You can't give matt smith a Stetson hat. You know how he is about his hats he'll never take it off." and moffat calmly replied. "Relax I have a plan." Matt smith manage to say I wear Stetsons now Stetsons are cool. Next thing the lovely River Song shoots and kills his stetson. Back to the Fez!
Why is the Doctor Welsh in this? Obviously like claiming things for my Welsh heritage, but Eleven was very much English, as was the actor. Welsh is the only British nationality that the Doctor hasn't been: 9 English, 2 Scottish, 1 Yorkshire, and David Tennant who was a Scot playing the role as English.
@thom Probably going off that all the new in-studio Doctor episodes were filmed in Wales (not sure about the Jodie eps) , Torchwood as well. Also not counting the "American" episodes or special locations.
@Ibekyme14 it was pretty important at the time. Fezzes (also burqas and paranjas) were symbols of the orthodoxy. This law helped to break traditional mindset and prepare people to other changes.
Counterpoint: Rule one of Matt and Fezzes is that Matt does not get to keep his fez. He'd probably run into the one cop who actually cared.
