My favourite for the national animal was definitely the hedgehog as it has links to our national epic. The hedgehog gave our epic hero Kalevipoeg good advice on how to fight his enemies. In gratitude, Kalevipoeg gave some of his spiky armour to him to cover his body. That’s how the hedgehog got its needles.
Well... brother/sister Estonia is nice and we would like to build closer relations. It's just.. I would've really preferred the hedgehog
Wolf seems more fearsome but also generic and boring, I don't know any country who picked hedgehog. They're really cute and curl up with spikes out for any aggressor, fitting?
Sorry I was being unclear. I know this is Sister Estonia, I think the artist drew her super-cute nothing unclear there.
In my comment I was referring a bit to the actual country of Estonia. which I do hope we will build closer relations with.
The brother/sister thing was mostly just a derp on my part, I'm used to calling nordic countries "brother" but halfway into it I realized I don't know Estonia very well so I'll add "brother"+/sister to not sound like I'm excluding someone. When I say that to Scandis I kind of just expect them to know what I mean.
I don't agree about the animal but else, fine by me. I hope we will welcome Estonia into the Nordic countries.
Sweden actually has historical ties to Estonia unlike Norway, muahaha.
Wait, that's not how I'm supposed to act to Norway. Being smug is the way we deal with dear brother Finland. For equally dear little brother Norway, this is for you - varför kryper norrmännen i affären? Därför att dom letar efter låga priser.
@katten Oh by all means be smug towards Norway too. As a Sami ,our favorite past time is tricking Norwegians and mocking them for being unable to survive in the wild for longer than a day xD
I surprisingly feel more kinship towards Finland actually. Not only because of Norwegian mistreatment of my people, but both the Sami language and Finnish are very similar, and since Kautokeino is so near the Finnish border Norwegian and Finnish Sami have closer connections than let's say Swedish and Norwegian Samis.
(If I could add a Sami flag instead of a Norwegian flag on my profile I would)
And yeah, I am slightly disappointed that the hedgehog didn't win out as they are objectively way cuter. But considering wolves are endangered across the world I do still think it's a really cool choice. People identify with their national animal more, and I think this will offer a bit more safety to estonian wolves (Also I could also really gush about everything cool about wolves. I am kinda scared of who I become once I get going .w.'). Regardless I am always in favor of a endangered species becoming the national animal of a country.
@TheGreatHeathenKing
First of all, thanks for sharing! I have to admit to my eternal shame I don't even know the national animal of any of the nordic countries, not even my own haha. I just looked it up, for SE it's moose (I had an inkling), for NO they don't have an official one but inofficial one is moose (haha), DK is swan (oh yeah disney taught us that) and FI is bear. Which makes me scared, we have them in Sweden too but Russia is supposed to be the bear. Does Sami have any national animal of it's own? It would have to be reindeer, right?
In a slightly evil way I like that you mock Norwegians about that, but you could probably mock us Swedes about the same thing
And the same question about how sami are treated exists here too. I'm surprised to hear you feel Norway mistreated sami people, but I'm not surprised to hear you feel more kinship towards Finland. To Finlands benefit.
Anyway, I'm all for petitioning SATW for a Sami flag option. I didn't know it didn't exist but I also never even thought about it so I guess it shows my ignorance. But damn they drew sister Estonia so cute she goes equally well with cute hedgehogs or ferocious wolves.
