City of Nightmares

City of Nightmares

Paris Syndrome is almost exclusively experienced by Japanese tourists in France.

It happens to about 20 people every year when they realize that Paris isn't as romantic and beautiful as they expected, the culture shock causing people to feel sick, anxious, dizzy and hallucinate. The problem even seems to be getting worse as more people from other East Asian countries get enough money to travel to Paris.

Apparently the only cure for this is to leave France and never return.

Armed to immobilize

Armed to immobilize

Everybody everywhere understands why some Americans want to arm teachers NOW because schools shootings are a systemic problem that will take YEARS to fix, but more deadly weapons in schools probably isn't a good idea.

Respect your elders

Respect your elders

Sogen Kato was believed to be the oldest man in Tokyo up until 2010 when officials finally entered his apartment and realized that he had died at the age of 79 in 1978. His death had been kept a secret by his family who were collecting his pension. This lead to a huge search for all people over 100 years, and it turned out that Japan couldn't document the whereabouts of 234,354 supposed centenarians.

Young Love

Young Love

It feels like all countries have their own brands of weird stuff, and no country got more stories about young men being attracted to odd things than Japan.

There's all these stories about the Japanese football team cleaning their locker room before leaving and Japanese fans cleaning the stadium after games. Don't know how many of them are true, but one can hope.

Sacred Animal

Sacred Animal

At a previous convention some fans told me about their family visiting England and taking photos of *rare* animals.

Sister England then visited Australia and took photos of Kangaroos.

Speaking of conventions: some of the SatW team will be at the MCM London Comic Con and at the London Film & Comic Con.

Not much of a comic today because my hand hurts, but no hand can ever hurt enough to not draw Cheburashka.

(Chop) sticky situation

(Chop) sticky situation

I went to a running sushi restaurant with some friends the other day and we talked about how weird it feels for westerners to eat fish and rice with our fingers. We'd much rather learn how to use a new tool (chopsticks) than poke our fingers into raw fish, even if it would be MUCH easier.

Wrong answer? Wrong question!

Wrong answer? Wrong question!

In Japan it's quite common for a grown man to adopt another grown man.

It started when company owners wanted to keep the company in their family but either didn't have sons who could inherit it, or didn't think their sons where up for the job. So what to do? Hand it over to their daughters? Ha! Don't be ridiculous! It's much more sensible to adopt a 50 years old man from work legally and keep the company in the family that way!

Gay weddings aren't allowed in Japan, so gay couples use this whole adoption business to become family in the eyes of the law. That way they can secure each other financially and be allowed to see each other in places where only family is allowed.
