Was it always there?

Was it always there?

Crazy Frog is the best proof that kids don’t notice that kind of thing because every single person I know had this realization as an adult.

Happy cute Yule

Happy cute Yule

I’ve been blamed for only focusing on scary and weird Christmas traditions. Well, for once Christmas falls on a Friday so I thought I’d celebrate by posting the most obnoxiously cute Yuletide picture.

A lot of Cinnamon

A lot of Cinnamon

A weird Danish tradition that always perplexes tourists. It’s not that we expect people to be married by 25, we just want to throw cinnamon at people. If you’re not married by 30 we up the torture by throwing pepper..

Lost the May game

Lost the May game

The maypole is hugely popular in Sweden and you can't have a summer without a maypole. In Denmark the tradition has mostly died out and been replaced with the Saint Hans fire, but there's still a few areas where you can find maypoles in Denmark, and a lot of those places have a "catch the flag" tradition.

On some nights young guys from neighboring towns are allowed to try and steal it, so other young men have to guard their maypole, while another team sneaks over to the other town. Fighting isn't allowed, so stealth is everything and it's all in good fun.

I asked a bunch of Swedes and non of them had ever heard of this tradition in Sweden, so it seemed fitting to have Denmark steal Sweden's maypole.

Wrong answer? Wrong question!

Wrong answer? Wrong question!

In Japan it's quite common for a grown man to adopt another grown man.

It started when company owners wanted to keep the company in their family but either didn't have sons who could inherit it, or didn't think their sons where up for the job. So what to do? Hand it over to their daughters? Ha! Don't be ridiculous! It's much more sensible to adopt a 50 years old man from work legally and keep the company in the family that way!

Gay weddings aren't allowed in Japan, so gay couples use this whole adoption business to become family in the eyes of the law. That way they can secure each other financially and be allowed to see each other in places where only family is allowed.

You got a call

You got a call

We all know Finland is going to throw that piece of wood at Åland any moment now and it'll evolve into a good old fistfight.

Why not a gun/knife fight? Don't be silly. Deep down they don't want to murder each other.

A Big F You

A Big F You

Denmark really did put Greenland through a lot of shit and fucked everything up like you wouldn't believe, and today Greenland has the highest number of suicides of any country (They weren't on the list for a long time because they were counted as part of Denmark).

The girl at the end is Sami (I know, I keep changing her design, but I think I'm finally happy with it) the indigenous people of Scandinavia. They were horribly treated by Sweden and Norway and, like Greenlanders, are still subjected to ridicule, so it's no wonder they didn't adopt the Scandinavian Cross either.

Banana Republics

Banana Republics

Sweden and Denmark are in a constant battle to see who can eat most bananas in Europe. At the moment Sweden is the ultimate European banana eater, but Denmark is closing in on them.
