Happy cute Yule

Happy cute Yule

I’ve been blamed for only focusing on scary and weird Christmas traditions. Well, for once Christmas falls on a Friday so I thought I’d celebrate by posting the most obnoxiously cute Yuletide picture.

Annoying Landlord

Annoying Landlord

A common complaint from Faroese people is that Danes keep forgetting about them because they focus too much on Greenland.

Loop

Until very recently people had to pay for their stay in prison in Denmark. Now that that’s no longer the case the state is much less keen to sentence people to prison, and you don’t get locked up for financial crimes.

My former Faroese housemate moved back to the Faroe Islands some time ago and one day she sent me a photos of some weird horse shaped thing made of wires and filled with stones placed in the sea close to the airport. She was basically like "Look at this shit! Why they do that!?" I assume they were inspired by the creepy demon hose at the American airport?

Faroe Islands and Iceland are close friends because they have pretty similar cultures. What they call a fun night out the rest of us call a horror show.

Let's Party

Let's Party

You do not understand how much I love Kopparberg.

On The Faroe Islands it's a bit of a problem that alcoholics steal hand sanitizer and drink it. They do it because alcohol for drinking is so damn expensive on the islands. How they are not all dead is one of life's great mysteries.

Bad Weather

Bad Weather

My Faroese housemate's mother told me stories about the winter storms on the Faroe Islands. They blow roofs of buildings and cars into the sea, but you know it's really bad if the sheep start blowing around.

You see, the sheep are so good at predicting storms they hide well ahead of time, so if the wind can pick them up it's BAD.

It's important to know what you like

It's important to know what you like

My housemate from The Faroe Islands works in a bookstore here in Denmark. She's quite good at her job so I once asked her if she'd like to work at a bookstore on The Faroe Islands. She practically recoiled in horror.

"I'd hate it. They practically only sell books about Christianity. All they care about when buying a book is Jesus"

Dress the Part

Dress the Part

It's a common misconception that because Denmark doesn't have an official national costume, Denmark doesn't have festive folk-dresses at all. Nothing could be further from the truth. Different areas have wildly different clothes though, so in one area men wore huge baggy pants, in another women wore men's top-hats, in another people wore masks that covered their whole face when outside, and the list goes on.

One of the reasons why Denmark doesn't have one official national dress is because the Faroe Islands and Greenland were part of Denmark for so long, and having one standard dress would be like erasing theirs.
