'@ShoggothOnTheRoof' You know, it would've been a huge national embarrassment here if either of our candidates would actually even spoke about their haircut let alone to let some reporter to examine their hair. And our longest served president was completely bald. And believe it or not, our candidates practically have an unwritten rule not to talk anything bad about their competitor, but they actually have to talk about politics and what their own guidelines are and why. Starting to insult the other candidate would practically mean instant loss of election. :)
And last time one of our main two candidates that got to the second round was openly gay. And the other candidate, instead of bringing that up, got angry when his supporters questioned that can a gay man be a head of armed forces. And even generals immediately announced that army has no problem concerning that matter.
@real-cool-cat As an American myself, I do wish out politicians had the.... shall we say class, of your politicians. But on the other side of the coin, it is also important for politicians to bring to light the flaws in their opponents. Otherwise, we would probably never see exactly who the people leading us are, and may well just hand horrible people power on the basis of platforms they never intend to keep. Of course, sometimes they get the power anyway. *cough*Trump*cough* Regardless, I do think we could really learn a thing or two from Finland.
@Sylverborn I don't really agree that politicians should bring out the flaws in their opponents. Sure it's important that somebody does it if the flaws are severe enough, though there are plenty of examples throughout world history of outstanding leaders who had severe flaws, alcoholism(Churchill) and such, or even crippling disease(FDR) but were great leaders despite those flaws.
But when their opponents do it that will predictably have everything degenerate into name calling just like this election did and that serves nobody. It's better for everybody if the candidates focus on the issues and the programs that they want to fly and explain why their opponents programs are bad etc.
@Drazahir That is all very true, but sometimes the flaws are so massive that there really shouldn't be an option for them to get elected. *glares at the new President elect* *sigh* Honestly, it is disgusting that this election ever existed, name calling or not.
@Wolfenbuehl It would have been even funnier if the Islamic thugs had to drag their German rape victims indoors due to slightly uncomfortable conditions.
@VinnyHavoc
Idk, maybe that's a popular opinion in the world about it right now, but personally America wasnt Obama during his term and America won't be Trump in his term. And please, america as a country was already hated and after the election it really is not any more hated than it was. No offense, the people of usa are generally lovely (plenty of exceptions exist), but your government has been fcking shit up globally for a while now. Really the only foreign hate to you guys about the election is from uninformed and unintelligent people who read something on an internet tabloid.
If it makes you feel better nobody around here would say that America equals Trump now, and nobody here ever said that America equals Obama either.
@VinnyHavoc Eh, still thinking it's rather stupid of people to associate the rest of the country with its leader. Then again, it wouldn't be that surprising.
@Finn123 This may be an ignorant question, but why would it be stupid to associate a democratic nation with the leader the people selected? I mean, it kind of is in this case since Trump lost the popular vote (I hate the EC with a burning passion), but generally that doesn't happen.
@Sylverborn It all comes down to popular stereotypical portrayals and popular collective conscious imagining. I doubt there are very many people, politically aware, who don't imagine that ferret-topped carrot when someone mentions America anymore.
And in Finland we are like +1 C and "c'mon it should be snowing already..." and when it does, we are like "OMG so much snooow it's so hard to walk and drive and busses and trains are so laaate ugh I hate snow, that white shit" and then snow melts "omg nooo it should be snowing already"
No, I'd have to say calling the choice of the creator of this series to depict her characters in any way she like "retarded" is the most retarded idea ever. Humon invented this series and own all rights to it - she and she alone gets to decide what happens in them and how the characters look.
Since she's kind she let's us enjoy it for free and if you have any complaints you're free to leave at any time and never come back.
You may disagree with he choices but calling them "retarded" is just rude and pointless since nobody cares what you think anyway.
Go make your own comic instead - then you get to make all the decisions.
Please, relax a little. There's no need to be getting so hostile.
Yes, it's free, and yes, Humon can make all the decisions.
However, it is generally not a good idea for her to upset her fans. She runs the risk of losing business.
When someone complains, it means they care enough about the comic to give the creator a chance to address their concerns.
Personally, I don't care for the Trump makeover, because I believe most of Humon's fanbase was in opposition to him. She's punishing her fans for something several of them didn't want in the first place, which is a little unfair.
However, I am just an Internet stranger, so take all of this with some salt grains. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Finn123 calls Humons decision to draw this comic the way she wants to "retarded".
I call Finn 123 rude for saying so - and you tell ME to relax? You tell ME I'm hostile?
So you think it's more acceptable to call Humons choice of drawing "retarded" then me calling someone who said so rude?
I think you have a very strange idea of what constitutes hostile, I must say.
Personally I don't think Humon cares about what the fanbase thinks in this case and if anyone tries to "complain" (as you put it) by calling her choice "retarded" I think they have about zero chance of getting her to change her mind.
Furthermore I actually think most of the fanbase is just fine with this as the majority of the people on this planet thinks Trump is a buffon who will be an awful president and they don't mind in the slightest making fun of him.
So no - I don't think there are actually many fans that feel "punished" by her decision to Trumpify brother America. Most comments whining about it have been people I've never seen before with brand new accounts that just came in after she made that comic.
I don't think those are in her fanbase at all and I don't think they represent the audience she intends to reach anyway.
Do not go down to Finn123's level. Keep yourself respectable. Please, let's not become hostile with each other. I don't mean to insult you, and I apologize if I am.
"I don't think Humon cares about what the fanbase thinks"
I believe this to be true as well. She can choose to do that. It's just generally not a good practice. Finn123's word choice was very poor, I will give you that.
Back into the personal opinions.
I don't understand the reason for changing Brother America's look, and I don't understand how this mocks Trump. As the main people seeing the comics are her fans, the intent behind his makeover falls to them. Is Humon mocking her fans? Does she blame her American fans for Trump's election, despite most of her fanbase being against him? I'm not understanding it, and it just seems in poor taste. Perhaps you are more enlightened as to her intentions?
Also, now we all have to look at Trump anytime she wants to put America in a comic, and that's just not enjoyable for anyone. :P
The last bit falls into No True Scotsman territory, so I'm not certain how you'd like me to respond.
So now you don't want me to "go down to Fin123's level"?
But when I called him rude you called me "hostile" and told me to "relax"?
I don't know why you're so convinced I'm the one who has to be cooled down?
I'm not the one calling Humons choice "retarded" or calling me "idiot" as Finn123 did in a new post above.
Yes, Finn123's choice of word was very poor and I called him out on it - that's all I did.
I don't like people who enjoy Humons work for free insulting her just because she didn't draw exactly what they wanted. People who believe they have the right to do that can go draw their own comics, that's my opinion on that matter.
I'm not talking for Humon in any way but I believe she's working in a classical tradition here.
Nations have been depicted as national characters for hundreds of years. I don't know which country you're from so I don't know which characters you know of but everyone probably know at least Uncle Sam for the US - right?
Now these characters have been redrawn in many, many different shapes during the years and there has already been - and will come countless more - depictions of Uncle Sam in different ways because of Trump.
Here are just three examples I found by a quick google:
This is not at all unusual for political cartoonists, to redraw the image of the national character to make a point.
Humon is simply following a tradition that goes back hundreds of years here.
I believe she did it to mock Trump and I think most people see it that way even if you don't understand how that would work. But maybe it was just the way she felt brother America looked to her since Trump was elected.
I don't know and I don't care because she's free to draw as she likes and I'm free to interpret her drawings as I like.
What I do know is that she's certainly not mocking her fans - if you really believe that you're really not paying attention to what she wrote below the comic in which Trumpified brother America first appeared.
Sister America is unchanged because she represents the American left as she called it, or at least the majority of the voters that didn't vote for Trump as I would call it. And the waste majority of Humons American fans are not Trump fans and are not represented by him in Humons view, but by sister America.
I'm not sure what you meant fell into "No True Scotsman territory" but to expand and reiterate my point from the last post I simply don't think Trumps and Humons fanbase overlap in any significant way.
As I noted before - most comments here who complained about this change seems to come from new accounts by people just registering to complain. That'll be the Trump fanbase. People who might have gotten a link to this comic sent to them by a friend who don't like Trump but do follow SatW to show what the rest of the world thinks of him and now they feel the urge to complain here, saying they will never come back and stuff like that.
In truth I don't think they looked at any other strip and if they did they probably didn't get them or their charm because they had all these strange countries in them then know noting about.
Trumps fanbase is certainly not the intellectual elite by any stretch of the imagination and expecting them to care for a comic mostly about the Scandinavian countries is really unlikely.
There might be a few American Trump fans here from before, but as I've said before they should just accept the fact that this comics might not be for them then, if they can't deal with Humons take on things.
Because I believe Trump will give Humon - and the rest of the worlds satirists - plenty of material to work with in the future as well. Making brother America orange is not going to be the last time Humon expresses her opinion - you can be sure of that.
And calling her choices when she does "retarded" is not going to make her change her mind.
And I will continue to call anyone rude who is rude - because they are.
"No, I'd have to say calling the choice of the creator of this series to depict her characters in any way she like "retarded" is the most retarded idea ever."
"You may disagree with he choices but calling them "retarded" is just rude and pointless since nobody cares what you think anyway."
Your first reply came off as hostile to me as well. Yes, Finn123 was being pretty rude about his opinion, but you had already called him out on it. I did not see it necessary to double up on him. I apologize for this.
I could understand your Uncle Sam comparison if she did it for any other country, but it seems to be only Brother America. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Sister America not being changed doesn't mean much, as Brother America is the dominant personality. In most comics, America is now being represented by someone the fans don't relate to, which is unfortunate.
Yes, Humon is free to express her opinion. People are free to be unhappy. Her response to their unhappiness is also her choice. We seem to be in agreement that she doesn't care.
I don't really care to get into the rest of this, there are some heavy biases against Trump supporters that will just turn our conversation into a circus. I apologize for ignoring part of your argument, but really, I don't think we could discuss it without dropping all civility.
I enjoyed Humon's non-political comics. If she's going to become so much more vocal about her views, perhaps you are right. While not a Trump-supporter, I believe it might be time for me to leave this site.
Thank you for helping me make up my mind. I hope you have a nice day.
"Your first reply came off as hostile to me as well. "
What do you mean by "as well"? Nobody else have called my reply hostile - only you. And you have not called Finn123's comment hostile - only mine.
So what's with the "as well" now all of a sudden?
Are you pretending anyone else has called my reply hostile or that you have also called Finn123's comment hostile? Which is it and why? Because non of those things have actually happened.
"I could understand your Uncle Sam comparison if she did it for any other country, but it seems to be only Brother America. Correct me if I'm wrong."
All the other cartoonists that have redrawn Uncle Sam or any other national character throughout history have in no way been required to redraw EVERY national character. Why would they?
They have re-drawn them to make a specific point about that national character and if they didn't feel they had a specific point to make about any other national character they have not re-drawn them and neither have they needed to.
You seem to be operating under the misunderstanding that cartoonist owe you or all of their readers something and if not you or all readers are happy with the cartoon they draw that is somehow a failure of the cartoonist. In reality all readers are NEVER happy with everything in a cartoon and a cartoonist who chooses to make a political statement especially knows this and is fully prepared for it.
People have been unhappy about political cartoons for hundreds of years - that's the point of political cartoons! They are meant to ridicule, lampoon or send up the party or person in the crosshair so they and their supporters are of course never happy about them - but if they want to be seen as mature they don't make a big fuss about it.
Because every politician and every party gets unflattering cartoons drawn about them - that's just part of the game in a democracy. Just as the president of the US will always be lampooned on SNL - that would have been just the same if Hillary won.
But Trump is thin-skinned and can't take any criticism or jokes directed at him at all and frankly a lot of his followers seems to be just like him in that regard.
But there is hundreds of years of precedent for this thing. Lincoln had to put up with cartoons of him, as did George Washington and before him the kings of Britain.
The Greek playwrights mocked the powerful in their comedy's as have every playwright including Shakespeare and Molières since then - this is as old as written history itself.
So there is ample precedence for what Humon did here and there is no requirement at all for her to please all her readers. Non.
As I've said before - I don't speak for Humon in any way, I don't know what she will do. But my guess is, since she felt strongly enough about this to re-draw brother America, that she will continue to mock Trump in his form when she feels like he deserves it. That's her choice and if you can't bare to see that happen I guess you have to avoid this site from now on.
Or you could just accept that this is a fact of human life that has gone on for thousands of years and try not to take such offence by it. If that's possible for you.
@Nisse_Hult For some who repeatedly says he doesn't speak for her, you sure do put up a text wall clearly displaying your arrogance. Cause telling someone else coming here they are free to leave the site of someone you don't speak for is so not hostile. So not hostile to the point that you just in the previous reply, had that person tell you you helped them make up their mind to leave the site. So gg. You, in not speaking for Humon, drove away at least one of her viewers. *slow claps* Lowering her page traffic and her add revenue, and drove away a potential Patreon. Maybe you should try not speaking for he, by shutting the fuck up. Before you drive off more.
You're confusing arrogance with opinion.
I'm allowed to state my opinion just like anyone else. But unlike you or Finn123 I manage to do so without being rude and demeaning to others.
That's the difference between the old concept of civil disagreement and this new trend fed by the alt-right that attract predominantly young men who mistakenly believe their opinions are worth more if they behave badly to anyone who disagrees with them.
I don't because I am able to articulate my point without resorting to namecalling because I can make a coherent argument.
You at least - unlike Finn123 - make an actual argument, but you can't avoid being rude and demeaning while making it, which in fact only weakens your case.
Because what you, Finn 123 and everybody else swept up in this new culture of rudeness fail to understand is that no one listens more to you if you behave badly.
In fact just the opposite is true.
Regarding your argument I don't believe I helped make up Ratlah's mind at all, even if he claims so. I'm pretty sure he will do whatever he decides to do based on what Humon actually does and not based on my guesses about that she might do.
I have guessed she might act in a certain way but that's not proof of anything but my own guess. The only real proof will be Humons actions going forward and only she knows and decides those.
And as I said she did this change in brother American appearance knowing full well that not everyone would like it and I don't think she's surprised if someone choose to leave because of it.
Also I don't actually believe this will lower either page traffic or drive away viewers as I believe those who don't like this change will still come her to whine about the change.
Studies show that even though liberal viewers are more likely to view right-wing programming like Fox News, a percentage of right-wingers will still seek out left-wing programming. See for instance:
Those studies relate to TV programming where the viewer can do nothing but yell at the TV in response. On a site like this, where those that disagrees can make their displeasure known by writing about how "retarded" they believe the artists decision to draw the comic as she did is, all indications are that right-wingers are more likely to return - just to be able to do just that.
Every Internet site with an open comment section has seen this development for the last years. A small, angry group of right-wingers will show up and make their displeasure known in any and all ways they can. Usually this will involve a lot of namecalling and rudeness - as we have just seen from Finn123 and you.
So no, I don't think Humon really cares and I don't think she will loose out financially on this decision any way.
She's just keeping with the origins of the character. When Obama won in 2008, she changed America's appearance then from the original Caucasian to African-American. And so, with Trump's election, the character evolved again. Honestly, it's just maintaining canon at this point.
@Finn123 The country designs are intended to be based on popular international imaginings and stereotypes. America has a bunch of them, mostly negative. We're pretty well hated by everyone the world over. But Humon chose to keep things light hearted and decided to use the impressions most folks get from entertainment media, which is predominantly american and is filled with artificially and unhealthily pretty models and movie stars.
However, after this november, about the only thing people the world over imagine when they think of America is Trump, and we're more hated than ever. I'm going to have to spend the next four years, minimum, with a metaphorical bag over my head while on the internet, simply because being American I'll be typecast as just as idiotic as that ferret-headed carrot.
@Finn123 It's a political cartoon, and yes, it belongs to the artist. Don't like it? Don't look at it.
There are OFF buttons on every device now you know. No one has toothpicks in your eyelids to keep your eyes open, making you see things you don't like.
@Finn123 ok. Thanks for the link. This is my first time accessing this part of it.
For the record, I think the artist should say what she likes. It's hers.
I remember some people not liking her free expression. I don't always agree with her, but, for me, it's hers.
If I don't want to read it, I move on.
Maybe I intended to respond initially, to someone else's comment and somehow grabbed yours.
Your adding of the number of the comment was helpful. For that, thank you!
I've asked that question millions of times. seriously, we wiped out the dodo, the tasmanian tiger the atlas bear, the great auk, the big eared hopping mouse, among dozens of others, but we still haven't wiped out spiders, the one animal that people actually dislike.... seriously we wiped out something as cute as the big eared hopping mouse (think a tiny big eared kangaroo with a brush tail) but we can't wipe out spiders???? come on humanity priorities
@Arean I'll take 10,000 bugs over 1 spider anyday, also it would just mean that we'll have more insectivores like birds due to the increased food for them, besides insects are good for you, plenty of protein :P lol
@crwydryny On a serious note, spiders are so numerous and omnipresent that there probably would be no realistic chance for any other types of insectivores to fill the gap left by spiders in our lifetime. And those insects would probably be more harmful than spiders anyway.
On a comedic note, we cant' wipe out spiders, for they are without number. Squash one and ten more will take its place, and that's not spiders but species. The more we kill the more will come, until we can kill no more. Want a view for humanity's future? Imagine cobwebs covering things in your attic - forever!
@crwydryny There are probably quadrillions of spiders living in every corner of the globe, so even if killing off all of them was even remotely feasible - it would be extremely arrogantly unwise to do so.
I don’t like spiders either. But consider this: spiders have existed since the Carboniferous Period. For those of you less familiar with geological periods, that means they’ve existed for, at the very least, 298 million years. That’s far, far longer than humans have existed. Spiders live everywhere in the world except Antarctica, and you can bet they play an invaluable part in every non-Antarctic ecosystem on Earth. Even if we could somehow eliminate all of them, I couldn’t tell you what the ecological consequences would be - other than that they would be drastic.
Spiders aren’t like those other animals you mentioned. The dodo bird was one species. Spiders are an entire order. To put that in perspective, large cats, domestic cats, dogs, bears, skunks, weasels, badgers, racoons, mongooses, hyenas, walruses, and seals are all part of one order. So the extinction of every spider everywhere would have a much, much bigger effect on wildlife (which also includes plants, funguses, and bacteria) than any one species of animal.
TL;DR - Spiders are too important for ecosystems for us get rid of.
@crwydryny Came across a theory once that spiders and similar insects were so irritable because they were rude. They went in unasked into your houses, homes, and so on. It was meant as a joke, ofc. I can't remember where I came across it.
@Carolus_Rex Mosquitoes I can (barely) live with. They don't bruise me, cause my car to run off the road, or give flu, depression, concussions, or frostbite.
@Swinnish Well, I don't know about that. I wouldn't say the summers are longer just because they literally just ended. Instead I'd say spring is longer. We probably only had about 3 weeks of summer this year.
