One bird in the hand

One bird in the hand

My Faroese housemate was telling me about her country's local birds, and that was when I realized what stupid names we've been giving said birds here in Denmark.

If you look up the Estonian flag you'll find a few Nordic designs among the official flag. They are a product of Estonia feeling Nordic, and were suggested as their new flag but it has never been used for anything.

Also, sorry for the very late comic. It's been some eventful days, and to make a long story short I forgot it was Wednesday...

So long suckers

So long suckers

The women are leaving the Faroe Islands, so lonely men are becoming a real problem.

Where's my f***ing sweets

Where's my f***ing sweets

My Faroese friend told me about World War II on the Faroe Islands.

A lot of British soldiers were stationed there, and got quite popular by behaving nicely and exchanging chocolate for lighters. They were so well liked the Faroese people often gave them food for free and invited them to dances.

The Norwegian soldiers however made themselves unpopular by behaving less polite and taking lighters without giving anything in return.

To this day some of the older generation on the islands still dislike Norwegians for this chocolate betrayal.

So remember, never not give people chocolate! They remember that stuff!

You look away for one minute

You look away for one minute

I am currently living with a Faroese woman, and this is how she explained Faroese politics to me: As soon as the Danes look away, the Faroese politicians have a field day and "do weird things". XD

Here's the whale spotted off Svalbard's coast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r62edSNu3U8

Most of the Nordics hunt whales, though not usually humpback whales, so that's purely for the joke.

The big shame

The big shame

I spend the weekend with a pair of girls from the Faroe Islands and we ended up talking about the whale killings and this "article" http://www.eface.in/denmark-is-a-big-shame-to-whole-world/

It basically gets everything wrong. They don't use hooks, but knifes and axes. It looks bloody, but that's because it's in the sea.

I'm neither for or against it, but I know it will turn into a massive discussion in the comments, so try to keep it civil.

Ungodly Surprise

Ungodly Surprise

You can all blame the Faroe Islander Boyishy for this one. All I can say is, you have to watch your mouth when you talk with me. :XD:

Originally Sweden and Åland were involved too, but I decided to break the idea into two comics.

Anyway, the Faroe Islands is the most religious part of the Nordics and the one with fewest gay rights (Gay sex is allowed, but not gay marriages and adoptions, and registered partnerships are not recognized)

Not all straight Faroe Islanders are of course religious and/or against homosexuality, and it’s nowhere near as bad as some of the middle eastern countries, so don’t get the wrong picture. Unfortunately some politicians with very religious views are in charge (One wouldn’t go to a dinner with Iceland’s lesbian prime minister who had brought her wife with her).

But no one is that homophobic without being in the closet... ;)

How the North works

How the North works

I found this lying unfinished around on my computer, and because I’ve got no comic today you’ll have to do with this.

Being the Dane I am, I of course forgot the Sami People (the Nordic "Indians").

EDIT: Yes, Sweden got Norway later on, but that is not what the bottom picture is about. For many years the Nordics were separated in West-North and East-North. When Sweden got Norway that messed up the separation of West and East and marked Denmark’s decline from power.

They grow up so fast

They grow up so fast

If only Norway and Sweden had known how much trouble Denmark was going to be when he grew up...

Because Denmark is made of sand from Norway, that means we have no natural resources. That is the main reason why Denmark went crazy and was so obsessed with taking over the other Nordic countries.

And you have to be impressed. Look up Scandinavia on a map. Can you even imagine that the tiny little Denmark ended up ruling over Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, The Faroe Islands and even part of Germany?
