Dance With Me

Dance With Me

I was reading up on Danish folk dancing, and the description "partner swapping" came up a lot. So much so that it's not unusual for women to end up with women and men with men at some point during a dance.

Also, screaming in each other's faces. There's quite a bit of that.

Danish folk dancing isn't set in stone, so it has become very common to add a bit of Russian flare to make it more entertaining to watch.

All of this can be seen in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyJSA7-KHqg
If it feels a bit slow, it speeds up at 2:26

I've seen so many women do this, so I can only imagine the Scandinavian ladies did the same after they settled their differences.

Bitchy Witchy

Bitchy Witchy

Happy Halloween!

During the witch hunts in Europe each country had their own witch lore.

In Norway and Sweden they were what you would expect. Women who did magic and could fly using anything from broomsticks to their husbands.

In Denmark however witches weren't believed to have the power to fly. Their favorite transportation was a horse at night.

And in Iceland and Finland performing magic was seen as a male thing, so Christians had a hard time convincing the natives witches were women. Instead men got burned and only one or two women were killed.

Eurovision 2013

Eurovision 2013

Belarus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKewBfUE2Mg and France http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQwiQj5Dyj8 wore similar dresses. One more sparkley than the other.

Netherlands http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5iazXvMw5o Can't be seen in the video, but it started with a clip of the singer boxing the air on top of a house, followed by her singing of birds falling from rooftops...

Malta http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EiuqczFZhQ The only way they could have made it cuter would be to have puppies perform the number.

Moldovia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xckgLUv73Jc was supposed to be a volcano, but I have to admit it reminded me more of an upside down ice cream cone because of her hair.

Italy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8oaxDV1q6o looked ever so adorably confused and like he was asking "I don't have any money. I hope this is good enough" which paled awfully next to Romania's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgHWFiavqjA glittery vampire that would send Edward Cullen running for his money.

Azerbaijan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN3d_V7KVLE had a man in a box, and was very close to winning.

And finally the Nordics.
Finland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlBXOveVh7c had a lesbian kiss at the end of a song to her boyfriend.
Iceland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzE88IYzXLI had Marvel/Hollywood Thor.
Norway http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjb_9ngE1sE had a super tight dress.
Sweden http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtjdTPnCcu0 had a guy sweeping his dancers off their feet.
And Denmark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3f9v8ebuD4 won Eurovision with an *ahem* golden shower.

There was LOTS more going on, such as a giant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMxpv8naRd8 and hipsters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOimfHq76xk but dammit, I only have so much paper.

I do think it's rather sweet though that the winning song "Only Teardrops" is actually about Europe and a plea for everyone to get along. :)

When I went to England I noticed that people would apologize or even freak out if they as much as touched my little finger. At first I thought that maybe I was putting people off, but later it was explained to me that English people are just incredibly nervous about touching people they don't know very well.

I've been to conventions in quite a few countries by now, and England is the only country where most people asked for a handshake rather than a hug. :XD:

Australian Princess

Australian Princess

While drawing this a program about the royal wedding between the Danish crown prince Frederik and the Australian Mary started on TV. :)

Mary have become a very beloved princess in Denmark. Unlike the French guy our queen Margrethe married, Mary was very quick to learn Danish and she just overall seems like a really nice lady.

It may seem like a weird mix to have Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Netherlands together, that’s because those four royal families usually hang out together.

Denmark crying at the end is also a reference to the wedding, where prince Frederik started crying like baby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL9ZlVwgnUU (And her father was wearing an awesome kilt!) :D

Girl's Night

There’s no hidden political or historical joke here. This one is for a special Finnish friend of mine. You know who you are. ;)

Everything is of course pink because they’re at Sister Sweden’s house.

Also, I’m experimenting a bit with Sister Denmark's looks. I’m trying to find the right amount of boyish for her.

Confusion

Confusion

Freakishly old idea. France thought she was getting this http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q7/matthiasxxx/HOT%20GUYS/af88.jpg :XD:

It always amused me when people said, “Sister Denmark looks really cute” or “Why did you draw Sister [inset country here] so ugly!? She should be looking more like Sister Denmark!”

Because in my mind she looks like a boy, and not in a cute tomboyish way, but in a “If she wears a baggy shirt people think she’s a hot guy with long hair” way.

To get this point across better I will from now on draw her without eyelashes and breasts. :D

Throughout the world Romania have two stereotypes: Vampires and thieving gipsies.

So of course Romania is a vampire who would rather steal your purse than drink your blood. Yes, I know that makes me a horrible person. :XD:

And yes, that is Sister England. Yes, I know you English people envisioned her differently, but this is the kind of women we see in your TV series and movies, so this is what she looks like. :D
