I find this really weird, to put women into the government just because they are women. IT means: there might be men who are better suited for a position, but it's taken from them because of their gender. That's not equal rights at all.
@brokizoli That's not what they're doing though. They have qualified people in government. It just means men and women have an equal chance of getting in.
@Karen Because ....Hungary.
Hungary did not have much time to warp its head around democracy yet...let alone equality. He does not understand the word and specialy not the execution of it without force.
(Like asking a swiss person about occupation ....they don't get it. - this one I'm just told about, the other I do know.)
@Remszarvas Aren't you generalizing a bit much?
And I fully support equality, but this forced 50-50% can go wrong. In democracy those should get political positions who got the most votes, not those who have a different gender, doesn't matter if it's a man or woman. <-- Actually I have some issues with this also, because this way popular people get power and not necessary suitable politics, just like in Hungary, U.S.A., Turkey...
@Karen I don't know how things work in Iceland, so I can't comment on that, but some countries set certain quotas of employed men and women. Which means that when they're at the edge of said quota, they will have to choose a slightly less qualified candidate based on their gender.
Personal story here: I am male, and I went to a vocational school with around 80 - 90% women. Even though I wasn't not qualified, I can't help but feel that my gender played part in that application process, because they wanted diversity. If I knew I'd be in the way of a woman that was better qualified, I wouldn't have wanted the place.
I whole-heartedly agree with equal chances for everyone, and I see that people are still judged based on their age, race, gender, etc., which is fucked up. I just don't think that fighting sexism with more sexism is really a good way.
@brokizoli It means that women have equal and fair opportunities as men, because of education , social attitudes , acceptance of women in leadership roles, less wounding of "male egos", etc.
@brokizoli but they aren't in government just because they are women. They are in government because they are qualified and got elected. No one cares what gender they are when voting, we only care that the people we vote are qualified to do the work. Your assumption that there would be better men, and that the women are there just because they are women is pretty darn sexist.
@Cloudberry You didn't get it. I meant it like. If there aren't enough women who are actually qualified, because lack of interest or they got less votes than some men. Then they shouldn't put them in the government just because of their gender. And same goes visa-versa.
Also in my opinion women and men have the same rights now to run on an election. So the citizen can vote who they want to see in the government regardless of the gender. If you set a limit for 1 gender it's not really democratic.
@brokizoli You're assuming it's the politicians who need equal rights. To be fair, I think most people who support this policy think so too...
But no, the benefit is supposed to be for the people being governed. Men and women tend to have different approaches and priorities, so splitting the power more or less equally between them makes for a more flexible and nuanced governance, as well as one that more accurately represents the electorate (which is, after all, split about 50/50 between the sexes without any need for gender quotas ;) ).
@brokizoli That is, as a lot of people have already said, totally not the case. Women are basically just as competent as men, and in any group with enough people of both genders, it would be very strange if the ones leading it was not representative, competence-wise. Added to this, the important part is actually not as much each individual's competence, but the groups competence all together. One group consisting of 10 competent white men with a background in engineering will not be much more competent than any individual member, while a group consisting of 10 competent people from different backgrounds will be a very competent group, with a much wider set of competences. This logic will at some level hold even if the white men weren't all engineers, and even if they each by themselves were a bit more competent than the individuals of the other group.
@brokizoli The problem is that sexism is pervasive and subtle, a cultural and systemic thing. There will probably be, barring systemic factors in education for example disadvantaging women (and that is something that ought to be corrected as well in terms of giving women employment should it exist), as many qualified women as qualified men for any given job, however people might overlook that and instead favour hiring less qualified men over more qualified women, or more likely arbitrarily favour a man over a woman if both are equally qualified.
@ju44 Dunno if my experience count, but to me it seems like western countries educational systems favour women over men in their teaching methods. Now I go to a technical high school and it is rather male dominated, but I am pretty sure that Danish education atleast don't have a single dash of any systematic oppression of women, would be more likely to be the other way around.
And now I have never really worked-worked, so I don't know about workspaces.
I don't mean to say what you say is wrong, just perhaps give a different perspective than what is presented so far.
@brokizoli that's kinda the opposite, if men and women are truly equal in society then there should be a relatively even number in professions that aren't reliant on something with a drastic biological difference, and even then they should reflect the relative difference that biological difference does in theory.
Point is, drastic divides in areas where cross-cultural analysis puts men and women within one standard deviation of each other (aka pretty everything that isn't a direct physical strength thing) suggests drastic differences in at least how men and women are socialized even if explicit legal discrimination isn't there.
Iceland is the most gender equal country in the world. Sweden is just the most politically correct country in the world. And will continue to be so untill it kills them. Which seems to be pretty soon.
@LoveToEat You mean Swedenistan? A lot of muslim countries end with the word "stan" , and if Sweden keeps going down the path it's going that will happen.
@LoveToEat Yeah I believe wanting to help people is a noble goal. But it should never cost the safety and well being of the citizens. And they are kicking people out of their homes to make way to the migrants, which raises another question aren't they refugees, not citizens? Germany maybe going down this road but I have hope this video right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBXv4uA_kvE
@LoveToEat That makes sense, but I don't think we should be opening the floodgates. I can understand wanting to help, but their culture doesn't connect. in Syria they have a stricter islamic law, and you got a liberal secular culture which values freedom, they just can't fit in. Why can't they go to turkey or other secular muslim countries, like Turkey, or Albania, or Azerbaijan? Why must they come to Germany, or Sweden? I just can't understand it...
@MuricaFYeah i can understand why they chose germany as their new home, because germany is known for their richness and liberalism. but to be honest if they want to stay there, follow the 'European Law' not the 'Sharia Law' and if we say that to them, they are probably gets really angry and tend to violently harrasing us, but if you just want to follow Sharia Law, why they went to Europe anyway they can just go to Turkey and Azerbaijan.
@Fancycakes well, we are just concerned about your beautiful country, your beloved people, we just don't want your country to crumble down, and also i'm sorry if majority of us don't know that information but thank you for giving us the information about the border
@Tjalve
Oddly, Canada seems to be fine with it; Canadian Arabs tend to be more liberal and accepting of gay rights and so forth than the average Canuck. Turns out that while outside radicalization from Saudi Arabia and Iran are serious problems, that can only happen when the society that the Arabs are living in treat them as unwanted foreigners.
@CorruptUser Well I don't have hard data on arabs, but for muslims compared to protestants they're statistically slightly more supportive of gay political rights but slightly less actually accepting.
If I had to peg it on something I'd guess it was because of political convergence.
I wonder how it'll take for Sweden to collapse in on its own. I'm living right across the border and watching this insanity unfold. Sweden is so damn politically correct they are officially Europe's rape capital.
Good job, Sweden! You are about to beat South Africa in rape statistics!
@Yakamaru Dude, those two cannot even be compared. You cannot at all compare how many rapes are reported to the police per capita anywhere in the world, because there are too many factors at play for the comparisons to be even remotely accurate.
@Sigart Yeah, Sweden's "high" rape statistics are because of the country's efforts to destigmatize rape victims so that they actually feel comfortable reporting it, where as in countries like the US, rape victims often say that the act of filing a rape report with the police is sometimes even more traumatizing than the actual rape.
@ShoggothOnTheRoof Exactly. Stigmatisation and consequences for reporting has an enormous impact on how many will actually report a rape (I expect that in countries where Dubai, where reporting rape will get you stoned for "extra-marital sex" will have an incredibly low rate of accusations).
Also, Sweden has broadened their definition of rape. Obviously, if they include grabbing in their statistics but, say, South Africa don't, then Sweden will have many more instances than SA. It's just. I am so sick of people using these statistics when you might as well get Germany's magic invertebrate to point out which country is worse.
"Historically, rape has been defined as forced sexual intercourse initiated against a woman or man by one or several people, without her/his consent. In recent years, several revisions to the definition of rape have been made in Swedish law, to now not only include intercourse, but comparable sexual acts initiated against someone passive—incapable of giving consent—because they are in a vulnerable situation, such as a state of fear or unconsciousness."
^ I'd say this is a rather universal definition of what rape is, or should be. Wouldn't you agree? What is wrong with going by Sweden's own definition of what rape is?
"The BRÅ has not released detailed data on rape committed by immigrants since 1996, but according to that report individuals with an immigrant background made up 53% of all rape convictions between 1985 and 1989."
^ Police reports doesn't include the nationality or ethnicity of the perpetrator anymore. Hmm, I wonder why? Could it be of political correctness? A phobia of being called a phobic? Even the dictionary is being remade into pandering to this human trash.
'@Yakamaru'
Poor people commit more crimes, amazing scoop sherlock holmes.
When you Europeans were crowding over the Atlantic to us you also moved into shanty towns and ghettos, and formed gangs and committed a shitload of crime, before things chilled out and those groups gained economic footholds and so forth.
"Suggestion: Travel to the US. Dearborne, Michigan, to be more precise. And see "cultural enrichment" for yourself. "
What's wrong with Dearborn? Its not a seething miserable ghetto like Swedish immigrant quarters, its a pretty typical urban town next to a big city. The crime rate is higher than the national average, but that's not bizarre for the urban setting and WAY better than what actual crime ridden areas are like. So yeah literally the only reason anyone talks about it at all is because of a large Muslim population. Sounds like you know nothing about it at all aside that. Hell you don't even know how to spell it lol.
Its so boring a news search for it on the first page is mostly stuff about dogs being up for adoption, town calendar updates, and some local sports crap. The only thing that even hints at the Muslim population is a demonstration for Aleppo.
That sounds really horrifying huh?? Who will adopt Spencer the Labrador Retriever??? Will the firefighters actually manage to spread cheer at their hokey local event??? What is open and not on the holiday schedule???
I live near to a growing Muslim population myself though, lots of Turks and South Asians mostly. According to you the boring suburb and slightly less boring semi-urban town where this is happening will see a horrific spike in crime. Oh but wait nothing is happening.
Finland is the most gender equal. We don't even have gender-based pronouns like he or she, his or hers, our personal pronouns are gender-less.
And our women wear very much the same kind of sweatsuits and t-shirts and crocs than men unless it's wedding or independence day or something. So we are almost like a Star trek civilization in gender equality. :D
'@SkySoldier' Well, we have to work hard and pay the living for ourselves and also pay the living of people that come here through Greece and of course we have to pay the clothes-shopping and living of some poor Southern European countries, so we don't even have time to take our working clothes off.
