Picking and choosing

Picking and choosing

It's a very common reaction in the Nordic countries to just dismiss Iceland's place on lists because they are so few people. I was reminded of this when I overheard two people talk about this list and one of them said "We have more people in our capital than they have people in their whole country. Of course it's easy to keep a place like that safe". Sweden had much the same reaction when Iceland was higher up on the list than them regarding gender equality. It's just a way for the rest of the Nordic countries to bump ourselves further up positive lists.

Let me sing you the song of my people

Let me sing you the song of my people

Of course more stuff goes on in the anthems, but I asked around and this were foreigners main impressions of the songs.

America of course has a tendency to make their own versions of foreign films, but they also edit foreign film covers and posters to make them look more aggressive because apparently Americans respond best to that sort of thing. I asked people how movies would be different if made ONLY for an American audience and I couldn't stop laughing at people's suggestions, especially those send in by Americans.

Sauna for a king

Sauna for a king

A Burger King in Finland has a sauna in it because of course it does.

All the American fastfood chains had to make some major changes to their recipes to be allowed into the Nordic countries. Burger King definitely isn't the worst offender. So be warned if you ever visit a Nordic country and craves fastfood: it's more healthy here but also more expensive because not only are the restaurants expected to use better ingredients but they also have to pay their employees proper wages.

The Rake

The Rake

Every time Trump praise a Scandinavian country for something the country responds with mockery. After he talked about how good Finland is at preventing forest fires the Finns responded with a flood of photos of themselves raking the snow covered ground and otherwise showing off their awesome rakes and all the amazing uses for them.

It's turning into a popular joke in the Nordic countries that mozzarella is Moomin meat.

Traveling Light the Finnish way

Traveling Light the Finnish way

Stumbled across a Finnish site selling mobile saunas. Finns will indeed bring/build saunas everywhere, even war zones.

Someone for Everyone

Someone for Everyone

There's this "loud obnoxious American tourist" stereotype. Obnoxious? Rarely. Loud? Yes, every time. A lot of Americans who come to Scandinavia comment on how silent it is, while the Scandinavians around them are thinking "It's not silent. You're just talking so loudly you can't hear the crowd around you"

Luckily for American's there's always the Icelandic people. This isn't a stereotype as such, but anyone who has lived next to Icelandic people know how loud they can be (and I have lived next to MANY), so it's no wonder that Americans tend to love them. Icelandic people also tend to be more "walk up and talk to people" types which fits the American culture quite nicely.
