Just Another Morning

Just Another Morning

Happy Independence Day Finland. :XD:

There’s no point to this. I just wanted to make a comic that had Finland, Sweden and Åland’s characters bouncing off each other.

This comic could have gone on forever, but I had to restrain myself. In my head Finland and Åland’s fight just keep escalating without any of them really getting hurt, and it ends with all of them drinking coffee together because Sweden timed it perfectly. :D

METAL

METAL

Originally it was just about music and Sweden was dressed up for pop, but it then turned into a comic about the famous Scandinavian metal scene.

Norway, Sweden and Finland are known for metal, while Denmark is better known for rock.

Iceland is of course dressed up as Björk. :XD:

Oh, and Finland has that weird reddish skin-colour because a lot of the Finnish metal and rock bands I’ve seen are painted in some way.

Exotic Food

Exotic Food

A little joke on what the food in the different Nordic countries is like.

The Swedes are said to mix weird things. I once tasted smörgåstårta and it isn’t half bad. It just looks and sounds disgusting when it’s put in front of you. It’s not a real cake, but more like a sandwich that have been turned inside out and dolled up to look like a cake.

The Norwegians are said to make really boring and plain food, without many spices or accompaniments. That have of course changed now, but most of the old traditional food is still rather plain.

Danish food is said to be well tasting but extremely fattening, or sweet. Sometimes both. However, unlike fast food it will satisfy your hunger.

Icelandic traditional food is just plain weird. :XD:

Finland is mainly known for their many different kinds of bread. I just thought it would be fun to have King Europe still refusing to taste mämmi. :D

I spy with my little eye

I spy with my little eye

The big story around here these days is that America have been spying on civilians in European countries without informing the government. It all started when Norway found out about it, and then other countries started looking into it and found that Americans had indeed been spying on civilians in their country.

But there was one thing America didn’t count on: A nation just as terror-paranoid as them. Denmark to be exact. There the government found out about the spying and sent out Danish agents to spy on the American agents. :XD:

For those who forgot, the woman with the hat is Estonia. And it is of course Sister Denmark spying on America.

Mixed Feelings

Mixed Feelings

Some different relationships between the Scandinavian countries. I tried to pick three that each would have a different country in centrum.

The first is how things goes whenever talks of a united Scandinavia comes up. Sweden and Norway starts fighting, while Denmark cries in the middle.

The second is about how Swedes and Danes seem to be fighting over who the Norwegians like best.

And the last is the result of history because the last wars to be fought within Scandinavia was Denmark vs. Sweden and Norway vs. Sweden. Sweden won both and thus became very unpopular, which can still be felt.

Nordic Halloween

Nordic Halloween

An early Halloween comic. Idea by Sbaldur.

America is dressed as the Marvel god/superhero Thor, while the rest are dressed as the version of the gods from the comic "Valhalla". Sweden is dressed as Odin.

One superhero that for sure will never be taken seriously in Scandinavia is Thor. Ever. :XD:

"Valhalla" is a re-interpretation of the old myths. For example, even though he’s a jackass, Loki doesn’t turn more and more evil. It’s just the other gods who trust him less and less because he keep causing trouble, and in the end they start blaming him for things he didn’t do.
In the story about Balder’s death he doesn’t intend for Balder to die. He just wanted to make a fool of Balder’s brother Hod by making him think he could hurt his brother with a mistletoe. So Loki was just as surprised as everybody else when it killed Balder.
Neither did he betray the gods during Ragnarok. The jotuns captured him without the gods knowing, so when the battle started they saw him on the jotuns’ side. He tried to get over to the gods, but was attacked by Heimdal.

In 1986 the comic got turned into a cartoon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNX_Heix390

How old?

How old?

I’ve drawn Denmark as younger than Sweden and Norway a few times, but that had to do with the age of the landmass. This shows how old the Nordics are as countries.

Denmark’s birth is from when it became a united country instead of tribes fighting each other, Sweden is from King Gustav Vasa's crowning and Norway, Finland and Iceland are from when they became fully independent from all other countries.

Norway is a bit tricky though, because he could also be said to be around the same age as Denmark. But this is how it's usually done.

Raising Children

Raising Children

First Christiania and Denmark. They have a difficult relationship, yet deep down they love each other. Christiania is referring to Sister Australia as a gold-digger because when Denmark and her are together they represent the royal family, which the Christianians are against.

Scania (Skåne) and Sweden. Sweden spends a lot of time correcting Scania, making fun of the way he talks, and threatening to send him back to Denmark. Scania is still reluctant to leave him though, as he still like his uncle but refuse to admit it.

Norway and Kven. Norway is not deliberately ignoring Kven, he just sort of keep forgetting that he’s there, so Kven spends a lot of time doing his own thing (The Kven People are people from Finland who migrated to Norway hundred of years ago, and is considered a ethnic minority with it’s own language).

Finland and FennoSwede. Finland is just thinking what we’re all thinking around children...

Iceland doesn't have any children.

Make a good impression

Make a good impression

The main reason why Åland isn’t too fond of Finland.

First off, mämmi looks like this http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:M%C3%A4mmi.jpg and is a special Easter dish in Finland.

A myth goes that when Sweden and Finland were fighting over Åland (the Ålanders wanted to be part of Sweden, and weren’t satisfied with Finland offering them autonomous status) and they asked the League of Nations (It doesn't exist anymore, which is why I put King Europe in the comic instead) for help, it happened around Easter. The emissaries went to Finland for a meeting, and the Finns served them the traditional mämmi to make a good impression. When the emissaries saw what was on their plates they said, “If this is what they eat, they should at least have Åland” :XD:

The real reason was that a number of small islands are between Åland and Finland, and if you sail to Åland from Finland, you can at all times see land. That wasn’t the case with Sweden.

Oh, and Norway isn’t part of EU, which is why King Europe is bugging him. :D

Girl's Night

Girl's Night

There’s no hidden political or historical joke here. This one is for a special Finnish friend of mine. You know who you are. ;)

Everything is of course pink because they’re at Sister Sweden’s house.

Also, I’m experimenting a bit with Sister Denmark's looks. I’m trying to find the right amount of boyish for her.
