A very snowy hill

A very snowy hill

We’ve had a fair few snowstorms in Denmark in the past month, especially where I live, and the staggering amount of people who still chose to bike to work is insane.

Bikes are a very standard mode of transportation here, and many only have a bike (me included), instead opting for busses and trains for longer travels (A lot of people who own cars even choose to take the bus to work because it’s cheaper and they don’t have to find a parking spot). BUT taking the bike made no sense in this weather because you had to walk most of the way anyway. I should know because I was one of the fools who stubbornly chose my bike every day despite the fact that it added FIVE HOURS to my travel time compared to if I had just taken the bus. We are all creatures of habit I suppose.

It was so common for vikings to keep bears as pets that they were known as house bears. They were often allowed to just walk around like dogs, causing so much damage it eventually became illegal to keep bears in Iceland. Some royals were even crazy enough to keep polar bears.

Motherfu*king Nature

Thanks to climate change not only have the giant wasp species already living in Scandinavia started spreading but giant wasps from other parts of the world have started moving in.

I’ll never forget a few summers ago when I was taking the trash out. The dumpsters were covered in wasps but I thought “I’ll be quick. Don’t disrupt them and leave” when a wasp the size of a finger flew past my head! Since then they’ve been a stable of my summers and I hate it.

Until very recently people had to pay for their stay in prison in Denmark. Now that that’s no longer the case the state is much less keen to sentence people to prison, and you don’t get locked up for financial crimes.

Old habits die hard

Old habits die hard

When most women got death sentences in the 1500’s and 1600’s for being witches in Norway, most Norwegian men got death sentences for incest. Isn’t history magical?

Masquerade

Masquerade

After my last comic so many Americans were like “The Scandinavian countries are so smart and we can’t even get Americans to wear masks” but the Scandinavian countries haven’t even suggested that people wear masks. All they’ve done is tell people to wear masks abroad because they otherwise risk getting a fine in countries where masks are mandatory.

YOU get some dignity and YOU get some dignity

YOU get some dignity and YOU get some dignity

Finland explained himself in the comic, but in 2010 Denmark started giving heroine to drug addicts for free and it was such a huge success that it has continued until today. Because of this Norway has started experimenting with it too.

It’s a lot cheaper for society because the addicts commit less crime, they don’t have to spend money on drugs so instead they spend it on things that are more healthy for them so they don’t end up on the hospital as often, they have to take the drugs in special clinics so there’s no chance of them taking an overdose or using dirty needles and spreading diseases among each other, there’s always staff ready to help them if they want to get off the drugs, and it’s a lot more effective way to help more people because addicts come into contact with professionals who want to help them before they even think about getting help themselves.

Nobody wants to be homeless or an addict. Though they often end up getting involved in criminality because of their situation, the act of being homeless or an addict is not a crime in itself and the people deserve help like anyone else.

Two birds in the hand?

Two birds in the hand?

In all fairness bee flies are pretty cute, but I’ve always been weirdly envious of the Americas having hummingbirds, so I had to laugh when someone told me bee flies are “our hummingbirds”
