Dress the Part

Dress the Part

It's a common misconception that because Denmark doesn't have an official national costume, Denmark doesn't have festive folk-dresses at all. Nothing could be further from the truth. Different areas have wildly different clothes though, so in one area men wore huge baggy pants, in another women wore men's top-hats, in another people wore masks that covered their whole face when outside, and the list goes on.

One of the reasons why Denmark doesn't have one official national dress is because the Faroe Islands and Greenland were part of Denmark for so long, and having one standard dress would be like erasing theirs.

Nordic Cuisine

There was a joke here about Norwegian food being bland and Norway making a cake out of wood, but then Sister Sweden happened.

Clean up your mess or else

Clean up your mess or else

Sweden doesn't fuck around on cleaning day.

People have been asking for another "just everyday life for the characters" comic, and then I remembered Norway knits.

Viking Fashion Disaster

Viking Fashion Disaster

To be fair, Viking women could demand divorce for some pretty minor things, like her husband showing too much chest in public.

Sheepish Food Cravings

Sheepish Food Cravings

I got to taste some fermented sheep the other day that my Faroese housemate got from her home country. I actually rather liked it and thought it tasted and smelled like very mature cheese (my Danish housemate however thought it smelled "wrong" and proceeded to open the door to vent out, not caring how much frost she let in)

However, I got a bit concerned when she told me you can't buy it in stores, so if you want it you have to make it yourself...

Choose your friends wisely

Choose your friends wisely

Obviously the situation is more complicated, but this is pretty much the simplified version. Politics and money, you know.

I gave Morocco a fez because all Moroccans I've talked with were pretty proud of the hat's origin.

A Big F You

A Big F You

Denmark really did put Greenland through a lot of shit and fucked everything up like you wouldn't believe, and today Greenland has the highest number of suicides of any country (They weren't on the list for a long time because they were counted as part of Denmark).

The girl at the end is Sami (I know, I keep changing her design, but I think I'm finally happy with it) the indigenous people of Scandinavia. They were horribly treated by Sweden and Norway and, like Greenlanders, are still subjected to ridicule, so it's no wonder they didn't adopt the Scandinavian Cross either.

All those tiny social rules are so easy to mess up, yet can mean life or death.
