Young Love

Young Love

It feels like all countries have their own brands of weird stuff, and no country got more stories about young men being attracted to odd things than Japan.

I'm just trolling you bro

I'm just trolling you bro

Confession: I collect troll figurines like other people collect stamps, so when I visited Norway this week I of course had to get a Norwegian troll. You can find a wall of nothing but rubber troll figurines in every Norwegian souvenir shop, but I always thought they were horrible looking and asked people if I could find better quality trolls in a normal store. I was always told no, because trolls are mainly a tourist thing in Norway these days.

Which surprised me because you can find the Norwegian souvenir trolls in Danish souvenir shops too if you don't have the time or money to visit Norway, but if you want the Danish trolls you have to visit designer stores that have "this year's troll design" and what not. They're more expensive but better quality and usually made from ceramics, porcelain or wood, sometimes with real wool for hair. I didn't expect Denmark to be more serious about trolls than Norway.

To be fair, I eventually found some really nice wooden troll figurines in a single Norwegian souvenir shop.

Are you not entertained

Are you not entertained

I'm sick this week, so you get a simple one I really enjoyed drawing.

Denmark's park, Bakken, is so old it started out as a clean spring that people went to for water, then performers started entertaining the visitors, then food stalls were built and finally people started building amusement rides. It was just a natural thing that happened and somehow it kept going to this day. You have to pay for the rides but you can still get into the park for free and just wander around because that's how it has always been.

America of course has a tendency to make their own versions of foreign films, but they also edit foreign film covers and posters to make them look more aggressive because apparently Americans respond best to that sort of thing. I asked people how movies would be different if made ONLY for an American audience and I couldn't stop laughing at people's suggestions, especially those send in by Americans.

Sauna for a king

Sauna for a king

A Burger King in Finland has a sauna in it because of course it does.

All the American fastfood chains had to make some major changes to their recipes to be allowed into the Nordic countries. Burger King definitely isn't the worst offender. So be warned if you ever visit a Nordic country and craves fastfood: it's more healthy here but also more expensive because not only are the restaurants expected to use better ingredients but they also have to pay their employees proper wages.

Ever noticed that Christmas specials of British shows are always creepy and scary? That's because they have an old tradition of telling ghost stories around Christmas.

Off to the rave

Off to the rave

There's some suggestion that the Vikings preferred dying at home because then they could join the family in death, and Hel was believed to be a neutral place like the world of the living, not the cold, wet and boring place the Christians later said it was. If that's true, going to Valhalla was probably a perk of dying in battle. You couldn't be with you loved ones, but you got to party in Valhalla.

The Rake

The Rake

Every time Trump praise a Scandinavian country for something the country responds with mockery. After he talked about how good Finland is at preventing forest fires the Finns responded with a flood of photos of themselves raking the snow covered ground and otherwise showing off their awesome rakes and all the amazing uses for them.
